Training CoursesOne of the primary objective of the CPS organisation and the Capilano Squadrons is to provide competency training in all aspects of boating with particular emphasis on safety. The essential material for new boaters is covered in The Boating Course which is open to the public and is held each spring and fall and includes as part of the course the PCOC ( Pleasure Craft Operators Card) and qualifies you for membership of the Capilano Squadron :-

This course is for members of the public -This course provides a general introduction to the safe handling of boats of all types, and is the prerequisite to all advanced and elective CPS courses. Once successfully completed, membership in CPS is available to the applicant. Material covered includes; types of boats, boat handling, government regulations, nautical charts, aids to navigation, rules of the road, elementary chart plotting and calculations, the compass, bearings and fixes safety considerations and equipment, lines and knots anchoring, weather, canals, locks, and manners and customs. Length of course is approximately 14 weeks ( one evening per week ) and held each year

Boat Pro Course
This course is for members of the public Anyone operating any type of recreational powered watercraft is legally required to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) by September 2009, which will be good-for-life. It is a federal requirement and applies to all provinces. Fines will be applied for non-compliance. This requirement includes powerboat owners, sail boat owners with an auxiliary engine, dinghy owners and jet ski owners and also applies to friends using your boat or jet ski.
VHF Radio Operators Course inc DSC
This course is for CPS members or members of the public -To operate a VHF radio on the Marine frequency you need a license - you need to understand the terminology and how t convey information that others will understand. This is not an arduous course but it is essential. This course covers proper use of the VHF radio, distress, urgency, and safety communications and more. Successful completion leads to the lifetime Restricted Radiotelephone Operators Certificate from Industry Canada. Course is a one day course.
