Training Courses
One of the primary objective of the CPS organisation and the Capilano Squadrons is to provide competency training in all aspects of boating with particular emphasis on safety.
The essential material for new boaters is covered in The Boating Course which is open to the public and is held each spring and fall and includes as part of the course the PCOC ( Pleasure Craft Operators Card) and qualifies you for membership of the Capilano Squadron :-

The Boating Course
This course is for members of the public -This course provides a general introduction to the safe handling of boats of all types, and is the prerequisite to all advanced and elective CPS courses. Once successfully completed, membership in CPS is available to the applicant. Material covered includes; types of boats, boat handling, government regulations, nautical charts, aids to navigation, rules of the road, elementary chart plotting and calculations, the compass, bearings and fixes safety considerations and equipment, lines and knots anchoring, weather, canals, locks, and manners and customs. Length of course is approximately 14 weeks ( one evening per week ) and held each year.
NOTE :- Some past advertisements stated this course would qualify for 2 High School Credits - this was an error - NO High School credits are available for this course .
VHF Radio Operators Course inc DSC
This course is for CPS members or members of the public -To operate a VHF radio on the Marine frequency you need a license - you need to understand the terminology and how t convey information that others will understand. This is not an arduous course but it is essential. This course covers proper use of the VHF radio, distress, urgency, and safety communications and more. Successful completion leads to the lifetime Restricted Radiotelephone Operators Certificate from Industry Canada. Course is 3 nights.
Electronic Navigation

This is a comprehensive course for anyone and everyone associated with Boating. It includes, GPS / Radar / depth sounders and a MUST for any serious boater who has forgoten his plotting !!! |

Piloting

FOR CPS MEMBERS ONLY - This course follows naturally from Boating, extending many of those topics that were only thinly covered and adds many new concepts. A must for serious boaters who want to improve their navigation and plotting skills, as well as to develop theoretical knowledge in dealing with adverse conditions and emergencies. Topics covered include tides, currents, buoyancy and stability, hull construction and performance, navigating in a current, relative bearings leading to running fixes as well as a review of two and three bearing fixes. The student will demonstrate an ability to tie several knots and to splice three strand rope, with the results credited toward the final exam mark. |
Fundamentals of Weather

This course is for CPS members or members of the public - The course will cover many of the significant aspects of the formation and behaviour of the weather around us. It is presented in a straight-forward form, eliminating much of the technical "jargon", and is designed as an introductory weather course for those who want a more practical approach. By recording a few simple observations every day and comparing them in class, each boater sees the application of the text and lecture material to the "real world". |
Marine Maintenance Course
This course is for existing CPS members - Covers preventive, seasonal and emergency maintenance, repairs to wood, fiberglass and metal hulls, gas and diesel engines, electrical mechanical systems, spars, rigging, and ground tackle, fire and safety equipment, moorings, trailers, tools and fittings. 14 weeks. (one evening per week)
